Investigating her mysterious birth leads a bright young artist into peril

The Chocolate Cobweb eBook Charlotte Armstrong

I've read a lot of Charlotte Armstrong's novels and most of them are just okay. This is the only one that is really, really good. I won't bore you by giving you the plot again, or annoy you by giving away the ending, but will just tell you that Armstrong did a great job at telling you, not just "whodunit", but letting you go along to see how they "dunit" and how they try to do it again. The characters are exceptionally well done, I think, and the main characters, Mandy and Thone, are both very likeable. Mandy is, of course, as people in the book keep saying, a darling and Thone, though he starts out to not be quite so darling, ends up being darling, too. I think this book would make a good movie, though the actors would have to be good at showing emotions and thoughts without talking. Probably the story would appeal more to women, but some men will like it, too. I've read this book several times and was thrilled to find it available on Kindle.

The Chocolate Cobweb eBook Charlotte Armstrong Reviews

Strange premise.
The author is in complete command of the English language. I was struck by the easy grace of some of her passages. The plot was unusual. Not exactly a mystery...but not exactly not. Strong female heroine. Very well plotted. A pleasure to read.
I saw a French film that was based on this American novel...both were entertaining.
If you like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, you'd enjoy this.
Suspenseful and like the ending, she is always worth reading!
This novel is amazingly modern, though first published in 1948. The plot twists were delightful. One wonders how it works--we know, as readers, whodunit right from the first, and who's going to do it next. Yet, the suspense is intense. The characters are delightful and well-written. Enjoy
The copy isn't without errors, the mystery isn't deep, the solution is a foregone conclusion, but it's fun to read and very engaging. I have another Charlotte Armstrong on my iPad waiting. I feel sure I'll enjoy that one, too.
From the first chapter I was hooked. I thought knowing from the beginning who the "bad guy" was would take away the thrill. However, the road to capturing the bad guy was filled with twists and turns and emotional ups and downs. So Amanda followed up on a story revealed by her Aunt Edna that she may have been switched at birth and found a murderer. Great plot, exciting action!
